Step-by-step: replace a branch circuit breaker

2. Verify de-energized

No accessible main shutoff
Some older homes lack a clear main disconnect. If you can’t safely shut off power to the panel, don’t attempt a breaker replacement. Your utility may need to cut service temporarily for repairs.
Special wiring situations
Aluminum branch wiring: Common in homes from the 1960s–70s, aluminum wiring needs special connectors and handling.
Recurring nuisance trips: If a breaker keeps tripping even after replacement, the real problem is usually an overload, short circuit, or faulty wiring.
